Step-by-Step Guide to Perfect House of Q BBQ Chicken Wings
Oh so popular and easy to do too! Are you craving chicken wings but want to make them at home? This step by step guide to Perfect House of Q BBQ Chicken Wings will guide you through the process.
We all have had wings at the pub while watching the game, at a restaurant as an appetizer or at your buddy’s house who invited you over. We seem to love these little tidbits of bone-in chicken. They can be cooked in so many ways but for grillers and smoke enthusiasts, we want to set out the steps so you can simply cook and Grill Like a Champion!
Variations for Seasonings
There are many options for the early steps to prepare chicken wings. Often, and in this recipe, we used a BBQ rub. Our choice in this recipe and video is to use House of Q Competition Beef Rub. This is where you should think through what does the flavour of this particular seasoning contribute to my plan for chicken wings. Am I looking for this seasoning to add a spicy note? a salty note? a sweet note? a flavourful note such as allspice? This could be your FIRST of many layers in the process. Take a moment and think through some of the options.
For us at House of Q, we really like the following rubs on chicken wings:
- Competition Beef Rub – it’s just a tiny bit of slat, a lot of savory flavours and a tiny touch of pepper… a perfect “base” seasoning
- House Rub – this is a good option with a sweet base, an equal part of salty flavour and then a perfect portion of savouriness. This rub is awesome on chicken!
- Peppered Bovine – this steak spice from House of Q is strong on saltiness and pepper – awesome for steak. But for chicken wings it can be a wonderful base flavour for “salt and pepper” wings. Give it a shot!
- Grandma’s Garden – this onion, garlic and herb spice mix is an awesome idea for a savory, not sweet and not salty seasoning. This would pair well for the second layer with Apple Butter or Five Star BBQ Sauce.
What’s the Second Layer?
For many wing cooks, doing two layers of flavour is enough to get a nice flavourful chicken wing. We agree however reserve the idea to add more steps f we want to up our game!
For glazes or BBQ sauces, there are definitely a few options from House of Q. If you want it sweet, you can do that. If you want it neutral and ‘kid-pleasing’, you have options for that too. Then, of course, there’s those chicken wing fans that want it spicy! That option can be filled with a House of Q sauce too!
- Five Star BBQ Sauce – this is our choice in the recipe below and adds a fantastic finish to the Beef Rub we used in the video. It is sweet and tangy with little heat all by itself. You can add that if you want on your own!
- Rock’n Red 2.0 BBQ Sauce – this is the latest sauce and offers a tangy tomato base just like many BBQ sauces but adds chilli and heat at the end. This is a great option for a spicier wing.
- Sugar & Spice BBQ Sauce – this sauce is super-sweet up front and draws you in on the intense flavour. Then it all changes…. to spicy! This would be the spiciest option for a sauce from House of Q.
- Apple Butter BBQ Sauce – the sweet flavour from the apples in this sauce along with the smokiness is a perfect compliment to chicken. This would be a mild option that could easily please Grandma and the three-year-old.
Simple Grilled Chicken Wings
Ingredients
- 2 lbs Chicken wings cut into portions
- 3-5 TB House of Q Competition Beef Rub
- 1/4 – 1/2 Cup Butter
- 1/4 – 1/2 Cup Franks Hot Sauce Or your favorite hot sauce
- 1 Cup House of Q Five Star BBQ Sauce
Instructions
- Place the chicken wings in a bowl and season liberally with the Competition Beef Rub. Toss the wings in the bowl to make sure all sides and every nook and cranny of the wings has some seasoning.
- Prepare your grill for indirect grilling or smoking at a medium temperature (approximately 300-350 F). Place the wings on the indirect side of the grill and close the lid.
- Meanwhile, in a pot melt the butter and add the Frank's Hot Sauce and Five Star BBQ Sauce. Heat until warm – there is no need to boil the sauce.
- Once the wings have reached 140-150 F which maybe around 30 minutes or so, place the wings in a clean bowl. Pour the sauce on top of the wings and using a spoon stir to coat all of the wings. Once coated, place the wings back on the grill so they can finish cooking and the sauce can setup on the outside of the wings.
- As an extra step, you can place the wings on the direct side of your grill so the skin can crisp and even char from the direct heat. This is an additional step and if you are more comfortable to continue cooking indirectly, that is fine! Once the wings have reached an internal temperature of 170 F, they are good to eat. Pro Tip: Check each piece of chicken because it is easy to have some that need a little longer cook time. No one wants to eat undercooked chicken!
